18 Aug 2023, Juba, SOUTH SUDAN – South Sudan and the United Nations on Friday reviewed the progress the country has made so far in implementing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This came during a meeting between the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Deng Dau Deng, and the Acting UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for South Sudan, Peter Van Der Auweraet.
Discussion and review of the status of implementation of the SDGs is particularly important as world leaders prepare to gather in New York in September for the annual UN General Assembly meetings during which global progress on implementing the SDGs shall feature prominently, according to the UN official.
He added that the meeting with Hon. Deng also touched on South Sudan’s preparation for this important event, especially the summit of heads of state and governments, as well as meetings and events that shall be held on the side-lines of the General Assembly.
Acting Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Muorcol Marial Acut, said that Hon. Deng’s meeting with Mr. Van Der Auweraet also touched on coordination between the government and various UN agencies.
“The discussion further highlighted the progress being made by South Sudan in attaining its sustainable development goals, as well as the ongoing coordination between various technical teams in different government institutions and the UN agencies in the country”, he explained.
