16 Aug 2023, Juba, SOUTH SUDAN – South Sudan on Wednesday expressed readiness to join the region and the rest of the world in the fight against money-laundering and terrorist financing.
This came during a meeting Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hon. Deng Dau Deng held at his office with a high-level delegation from the Eastern and Southern African Anti-Money Laundering Group (ESSAMLG), led by Ms. Bopelokgale Soko.
Hon. Deng told the delegation that South Sudan was committed to enacting the legislation needed to strengthen its hand in this fight, as well as ratifying all regional and international instruments related to money laundering and terrorist financing.
The Acting Minister, however, pointed out that South Sudan lacked experience and skills in this area and requested the eastern and southern African body to support build the capacity of South Sudanese to enable them perform better.
Speaking at a news conference after the meeting, Ms. Soko underscored the importance of the meeting, especially because it enabled ESSAMLG get a better understanding about how the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation can contribute in the region’s effort to combat money laundering and implement counter terrorist financing measures.
“The meeting was fruitful in the fact that we were able to come up with actionable items, it actually demonstrated the political commitment of South Sudan’s government to fight money laundering and terrorist financing,” she said.
