Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Deng Dau Deng held a meeting with his Egyptian counterpart in Cairo on Wednesday that focused on the situation in Sudan and how its neighbours can help end the ongoing violence in the country, which has left thousands dead and displaced millions.
Hon. Deng’s meeting with Sameh Shoukry came ahead of a summit of Sudan’s neighbours in the Egyptian capital that was being held at the request of Egyptian President Abdel Fatah el-Sissi to try to thrash out ideas on how to end the bloody conflict, which has been raging on since mid April between forces loyal to Sudanese leader Abdel Fatah al-Burhan and commander of the Rapid Support Forces Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
South Sudanese President Salva Kiir was expected to attend Thursday’s summit, along with leaders from several countries neighbouring Sudan, including Chad, Central Africa, Ethiopia, and Eritrea, with the aim of “developing effective mechanisms” for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
