Gen. Al Burhan in Juba for talks with President Kiir on Sudan conflict

04 Sept 2023, Juba, SOUTH SUDAN –  The Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan arrived in Juba on Monday for talks with President Salva Kiir that was expected to focus on the ongoing crisis in the Sudan.

Minister of Cabinet Affairs Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro told reporters that the visit was important because peace in the Sudan was in the interest of South Sudan.

“It is known that President Kiir is the only person who has intimacy and knowledge about Sudan and can find a solution to the Sudanese crisis,” he said ahead of the talks.

Similar sentiments were echoed by Sudan’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali al-Sadiq.

“We in Sudan feel that South Sudan is the best country to meditate the conflict in Sudan, because we have been one country for so long and we know each other, we know the problems and we know our needs,” he said.

Its worth mentioning that this is Gen. Al Burhan’s second trip outside Sudan since the conflict erupted in Khartoum on 15th April this year.

Last week, he was in the Egyptian coastal city of el-Alamein for talks with President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, to exchange views on how to resolve the conflict in Sudan through peaceful means.

In July, leaders of the seven countries bordering Sudan, including President Kiir, met in Cairo and endorsed an Egyptian initiate to end the ongoing conflict in the Sudan.

Fighting erupted in mid April between Sudanese government forces under Gen. Al Burhan, and Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Since then, South Sudan has had regular contacts with both parties in an effort to end the fighting.
