Juba, 4 February 2024 (MFA&IC) — The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation held a productive dialogue with H.E. Ambassador Mohieldin Salim Ahmed, the Head of the League of Arab States Mission in South Sudan.
The discussions focused on the ongoing peace process in South Sudan, the current status of relations with Sudan, and opportunities for enhanced collaboration with the League of Arab States.
The Honorable Deputy Minister expressed deep appreciation for the League’s unwavering commitment to partnership, highlighted by the establishment of its mission in South Sudan. He praised the League’s support for the sovereign and bipartisan decision to extend the transitional period, recognizing its importance for stability.
During the meeting, the Deputy Minister provided an update on the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS). He emphasized the Government of South Sudan’s commitment to ensuring free and fair elections at the conclusion of the transitional period. Additionally, he informed Ambassador Mohieldin about the Tumaini Initiative, noting its complementary role to the R-ARCSS.
The Deputy Minister also briefed Ambassador Mohieldin on the current dynamics of South Sudan-Sudan relations in light of the recent incidents in Wad Madani. He reported that while the situation remains “stable,” it faces both traditional and emerging challenges.
Ambassador Mohieldin expressed his condolences for the lives lost during the Wad Madani incidents and the recent airplane crash. He commended the Government of South Sudan for its management of the associated tensions and expressed the League of Arab States’ readiness to support South Sudan’s peace and electoral processes.
Both parties pledged to maintain open communication to explore ways for collaboration and cooperation, both bilaterally and multilaterally, with members of the League of Arab States and the League itself.
